INSTRUCTIONS
How to play VIVE THINK CARDS
VIVE THINK CARDS
… A neuro-led process for developing clever, capable teams and creating innovative solutions
Guiding Rules:
1. All players must answer the question asked of them
2. Answers must be different from previous answers given to the same question
3. No commenting on another person’s answer either negatively or positively
4. During Discussion, all previous answers and discussion comments are treated with respect
5. Absolutely no ridiculing of ‘out there’ answers. These often lead to the best solutions with a bit of innovative tweaking.
Instructions:
BEFORE EACH GAME, STATE THE SUBJECT OR AREA UNDER INVESTIGATION
GAME 1. For more weighty issues or for teams new to VIVE THINK CARDS
Choose a facilitator and a scribe who may use a whiteboard or simply take notes.
The facilitator deals the first card and reads the question on the card to each team member in random order as the scribe writes down the answers. When everyone has answered the facilitator deals card number 2 and reads the question on that card to each player in a different random order to the previous card. Repeat until all cards are answered.
If required, set a time limit for each card. Eg, 20 secs for a fast game or 5 minutes for a weighty issue. This is optional.
Time limits optional for Discussion cards as the facilitator leads an open discussion referring to the scribe’s notes as needed.
You get to play the game with rules set by you except for the Guiding Rules which are mandatory in each game.
GAME 2. Preferred for whole team engagment
Shuffle the deck of VIVE THINK CARDS and then deal face down to all players. Depending on the size of the team, some players will be dealt 2, 3 or more cards
The players turn over the cards and take turns at facilitating in order of the cards. The player of card number 1 becomes the facilitator for that card and so on.
The player with the Discussion card becomes the scribe for that section and facilitator for that discussion.
Time limits are again optional.
GAME 3. Fast game for less important issues (only for those well practiced at using VIVE THINK CARDS and using respectful communication during discussions)
Shuffle the deck of VIVE THINK CARDS and then deal face down to all players.
The players turn over their cards and in order of the numbered cards, answer the question they have been dealt. Only one answer is given by the player dealt the card. Even though only one answer is given, this has the capacity for all team members to open their thinking as they have grown divergent thinking neural pathways in their brain due to VIVE THINK CARDS practice. The players dealt the Discussion cards lead an open discussion with whole team involvement as per usual.
GAME 4. Ensure randomness
Collect all team members business cards and shuffle placing face down.
play as for game 1 except the facilitator takes the top business card and asks that person to answer first and so on. Quickly reshuffle at the end of each card and place face down again ready for the next question.
This is fair and random and ensures there is no bias either intentional or unconscious coming from the facilitator in choosing who answers questions in what order. Alternatively, put all names into a hat.
GAME 5. Extreme Divergence
The Facilitator reads each VIVE THINK CARD and rather than orally provide answers, players write down as many answers as they can for each card within a given time limit - perhaps one to five minutes. Each Player reads their list of answers at the Discussion Card and the whole team discusses the best options. Award a prize to the person who wrote down the most answers.

You may create other games with VIVE THINK CARDS provided that the Guiding Rules are followed.
To maximize engagement and creativity, it might be helpful to incorporate elements of gamification, such as points or rewards as in game 5.
Or if at a large conference, work in teams. Each team looking at the same section of the business. It would be interesting to see what each team determined the problems were and their solutions.
Additionally, in some circumstances and depending on need, allowing players to work together in pairs could foster collaboration and encourage the sharing of ideas.

STAFF RETENTION
The ‘Great Resignation’ is really the
‘Great Discontent'
state Vupyla Ghandi and Jennifer Robison in a Gallup article (July 22 2021). They also write that "employee engagement correlates strongly to employee retention"
Gallup, a global analytics company, found "it takes more than a 20% pay raise to lure most employees away from a manager who engages them, and next to nothing to poach most disengaged workers".
The problem is many companies task the HR department with engagement strategies that are often too far removed from the team. VIVE THINK CARDS are portable to carry and ready to use in meetings making it easy for managers to engage their staff in a creative process that will yield innovative results.
Gallup found that employees want meaning and purpose and want to be known for what makes them unique.

Dr Amy Climer PhD in Leadership and Change, attests the most innovative organisations are the ones who intentionally develop creativity in their teams. It doesn’t just rely on hiring creative people. Her research showed three key factors were required to create a team’s ability to innovate: Team Purpose, Team Dynamics, and Creative Process. VIVE THINK CARDS contain these three key factors.
​Team Purpose. The purpose is uncovered early in the VIVE THINK CARDS games as the reasoning behind a need to innovate becomes clear. Beyond this, a leader needs to successfully communicate the big picture purpose of the team or organisation and as purpose drives innovation, innovation can drive purpose
Team Dynamics. In order for a team to function at it’s most brilliant, each individual member needs to have psychological safety to be able to put forward an idea without fear of ridicule or attack. People need to be able to bring their whole self to the team in order for the organisation to realise full value from each individual resource and each team member needs psychological safety to perform at their best. There also needs to be some creative abrasion for ideas to develop. The environment needs to be conducive to people disagreeing on different ideas and concepts without fear of being branded as negative or having a concern that there could be some leader bias.
VIVE THINK CARDS create an environment where there is both psychological safety and an allowance for creative abrasion as the rules of the games mean that all players must contribute both negative and positive answers without other players commenting on the validity of the answers
Creative Process. A game of VIVE THINK CARDS is an easy and workable creative process ready to be played at any meeting. There are a few different games that can be played with the VIVE THINK CARDS providing flexibility for different situations. The VIVE THINK CARDS process makes it easy to get the most out of the combined talent of your teams, creating a true mastermind experience.
It is highly recommended that VIVE THINK CARDS be played regularly to create clever, capable teams and promote an environment of continual improvement.
PROBLEM SOLVING
In his book Creativity Inc., Ed Catmull states "What makes Pixar special is that we acknowledge we will always have problems, many of them hidden from our view; that we work hard to uncover these problems, even if doing so means making ourselves uncomfortable; and that, when we come across a problem, we marshal all of our energies to solve it. This more than any elaborate party or turreted workstation, is why I love coming to work in the morning. It is what motivates me and gives me a definite sense of mission."
He also expresses his frustration that in the early Pixar years, he was not approached with troubles or complaints. He was unaware when many problems existed. As is common in so many organisations, groupthink, lack of feedback process, and hierarchical trepidation can stall progress or prevent a company from reaching its full potential. Good thing Ed sorted that out or we wouldn’t have the wonderful Pixar movies we all enjoy today.
When problem-solving, Daniel Markovitz writes in Harvard Business Review (November 27 2020), "Before you can solve a problem, you need to know what exactly you’re trying to solve. Unfortunately, too many of us want to rush to conclusions before clearly understanding the problem". He warns against rushing to solutions which can result in ineffective Band-Aid fixes which often makes problems worse.
VIVE THINK CARDS agree with Ed and Harvard Business and incorporate a creative whole team problem-solving process in Forensic Thinking to inspire full, whole team engagement in productive and effective problem-solving. Individuals who are unaccustomed to engaging in deep thinking and open discussions may initially feel threatened by the introduction of Vive Think Cards.

Likewise, those who have been conditioned to conform to authority figures may find it unsettling to express their own ideas.
